 Sergei est officiel de la marine russe  décide de fuir pour échapper au régime communiste,  il profite d’une tempête  qui se déchaîne sur l’océan pacifique. Le navire doivent rester aux cotes du canada, celui se jette a l’eau glacial après trois heures, de nage il se retrouve  au point de départ :

« Que faire alors ? Aller une autre fois vers la cote, en ces moments cela me paraissait pour le moins impossible combien de temps pourrai  je survivre a cette température. Mort de froid, je fis un effort pour me rendre compte de la situation, je pris la décision, je préfèrai mourir cherchant la vraie vie que de continuer à vivre comme je l’avais fait jusqu’à ce moment. Je ne voulais ni ne pouvait retourner au genre de vie que j’avais connu,  même si je me noyais je ne devais pas retourner à la barque. »

Texto para preparar a conferência de dia 27 de Outubro: “Introdução. O que é a liberdade?”

Viver a liberdade com decisão

       É possível viver a liberdade sem decisão? Paradoxalmente, sim.
Existem pessoas que passam pela vida “livres” na teoria, mas apáticas
e escravas das circunstâncias na prática. Isso acontece porque a
liberdade não consiste apenas na possibilidade de fazer qualquer tipo
de escolha – inclusive aquela de não usar a liberdade, de não escolher
nada. O verdadeiro sentido de liberdade, por outro lado, acarreta algo
muito mais apaixonante: a construção de si mesmo.
       A liberdade é real, mas tem seus limites. E esses limites não são
realidades negativas como às vezes se pensa, e sim facetas da nossa
identidade, características que nos fazem ser como somos e não outra
coisa. Por isso, se sonhamos configurar a nossa vida de acordo com o
que queremos (e isso significa em ultima instância encontrar a
felicidade), antes de usar a liberdade é necessário adquirir um
verdadeiro conhecimento próprio, saber quem somos, quais são as nossas
qualidades e os aspectos menos desenvolvidos da nossa personalidade.
Em outras palavras, para acertar no uso da liberdade primeiro devemos
dominar o nosso modus operandi e depois… eleger!
       Optar por algo significa sempre deixar de lado outras oportunidades.
Se começo a faculdade de medicina, por exemplo, tenho de prescindir do
sonho de ser engenheiro aeronáutico. Se desejo morar em Roma, não
posso viver no Nepal. Também não posso casar com todos os homens do
mundo, e assim por diante. Uma eleição sempre é feita em detrimento de
outras. E essa realidade, de forma análoga aos limites, não é um peso
ao qual nos devemos resignar. Seria uma pena se concebêssemos a
eleição de um compromisso como uma espécie de destino inexorável. A
possibilidade de assumir com consciência um compromisso que, depois de
uma análise ponderada da nossa identidade, nos parece o mais
apropriado, “renunciando” a outros, desvela o sentido da nossa vida,
abre portas para novas aventuras e preenche todas as nossas
aspirações.
       Em resumo, usar a liberdade com inteligência e decisão, de acordo com
o conhecimento de quem somos, é trilhar o caminho rumo à felicidade.
Já dizia Chesterton, na sua obra  Ortodoxia, “(…) nunca eu poderia
conceber nem tolerar nenhuma Utopia que não me deixasse a liberdade a
que me sinto mais apegado: a liberdade de acorrentar-me”.
       Grandes homens e mulheres, conhecidos ou desconhecidos, usaram  a
liberdade com decisão e construiram com garbo a história de suas
vidas. Que vontade de conseguir o mesmo não é verdade? De chegar ao
fim de vida e pensar, “valeu a pena viver!” Sobre isso falaremos no
proximo dia 27. Até la!

Eminem runs a cuss-free house

I can distinctly remember sitting in my room as a young high school student and making my mom listen to one of Eminem’s first rap songs. I’m sure she was horrified at the lyrics, which are straight-forward, often crude and usually filled with profanity. To my adolescent brain he was a genius.

To a certain extent, he really was a genius. The white, Detroit, Michigan-born rapper was an enigma to the industry when he first came on the scene that had previously been dominated by black artists. He still is one of the only white artists to find success in this industry. (And no, I don’t think Asher Roth counts.) But then his life took a tail spin. He turned out his Relapse album in 2009, which sounded nothing like his former glory, and then fizzled out, thanks to a combination of marital problems and drug abuse. It seemed his career, maybe even his life, was coming to an end.

But then, earlier this year, he was suddenly back and looking like a completely different person. This summer, he released his Recovery album, which –as you can guess — chronicles his transition from down-in-the-dumps drug addict with suicidal tendencies to a clean, sober and refocused family man. His songs are still full of profanity and crude descriptions, but there is also a softer, more human side to him. He raps about nearly killing himself and then seeing his daughter’s face. He talks about his love for his ex-wife and says that while they will never be able to work things out, he will love her till she dies. He confesses that his Relapse album was horrible and that he is ashamed of letting down the fans. He vows to stay clean and sober and refocus his energy on his children, his music and his fans. Ignoring the profanity, it’s pretty inspirational. And as a long time fan, I’d say he’s still got what it takes to influence the industry and stay on top of the game. This interview with Eminem a couple weeks ago caught my attention. He admits that in his house, swear words are never used, because he wants his daughter to grow up in a wholesome environment. The interviewer pointed out that Eminem’s very own music teaches kids to use profanity and his response was that it wasn’t his fault. It is the parents´ job to police their children and set the boundaries.

Um… wait a minute, that seems a little hypocritical. If Eminem doesn’t allow those kinds of words to infiltrate his own house, why is he reaching the homes and rooms of millions through his music and passing along the very words he won’t use at home? Sure, parents have the primary role of raising their children. But, as apparent in my own situation, my mother outlawed swearing when I was growing up. I still listened to Eminem and I still cursed – just not at home where she would hear me.

I’m sure Eminem feels his songs, despite all their troubling lyrics, mirror the tough streets he came from and the emotions that run through him. It’s authentic and true to life. But it’s a shame he can’t take his popularity, his immense talent and his new messages to the streets in a more family-friendly manner.
